DistributionSE Brazil (Sao Paulo, Rio Grande do Sul, Rio de Janeiro [HR 32: 274], Parana, Minas Gerais, Santa Catarina ?), E Paraguay, NE Argentina, Uruguay

Type locality: Uruguay (“Monte Video”)  
Reproductionoviparous. 
TypesType: USNM or ANSP, but apprently lost fide TTWG 2021: 43.
Holotype: NHMUK 1947.3.5.85 [platanensis]

CommentHabitat: freshwater (Small rivers) 
EtymologyNamed after Latin tectum = roof, a covering and fero = I bear, carry; a reference to the carapace.

The genus was named after Greek hydor = water (when used as a prefix, hydro-); Medusa was one of the three Gorgons in Greek mythology.
