Type locality: Kina-Balu Mountains, North Borneo.  
Reproductionoviparous 
TypesHolotype: ZMH (missing fide HALLERMANN 1998). Only one extant specimen of C. kinabaluensis is known and deposited in the Kyoto University Collection and has been examined by OTA & HIKIDA (1996). 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: “Eine mittelgroße Agame mit einer KRL von < 145 mm und einem mehr als doppelt so langen Schwanz. Sie erinnert mit den – insbesondere bei Männchen – sehr großen Schuppenplatten am Kopf, dem sichtbaren Tympanum und ihren Kämmen auf dem Kehlsack, Nacken sowie Rücken an die Australische Winkelkopfagame Lophosaurus boydii (Macleay, 1884). In Verbindung mit einer relativ gleichmäßigen, Calotes-artigen Körperbeschuppung unterscheidet sich diese Art von allen anderen Agamen.” (MANTHEY & DENZER 2019: 4)

Type species: Calotes kinabaluensis DE GRIJS 1937 is the type species of the genus Hypsicalotes MANTHEY & DENZER 2000. 
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.
