CommentDistribution: dunklei has been found in S Texas and jani jani is only in Mexico, not the US (Dan Mulcahy, pers. comm. 24 Aug 2018). 
EtymologyThe name jani is a patronym for the 19th century herpetologist Giorgio Jan, who along with his co-author, Ferdinand Sordelli, authored lconographie Generale des Ophidiens, a classical work in herpetology that was published in three volumes from 1860 to 1881.

H. j. dunklei was named after the collector of the type specimen, David Hosbrook Dunkle (1911-1984), American paleontologist, and curator of vertebrate paleontology for the Cleveland Museum of Natural History and later associate curator for the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History.
