DistributionN India (W Himalaya, Himachal Pradesh: Districts of Simla, Garhwal in the state of Chamba), Nepal, elevation up to 8500 feet.

Type locality: Valley of the Sutlej near Kotegurh, Western Himalaya (= Kotgarh fide SMITH 1935).

CommentSynonymy mostly after WERMUTH 1967. 
EtymologyProbably named in contrast to Oreocalotes minor (now Calotes paulus) or for the somewhat larger size of the species (about 7-8 cm SVL) compared to O. minor, from Latin major = greater, larger.
