Diagnosis
CommentSynonymy: has been considered as a synonym of K. cruentatum until it was revalidated by Iverson & Berry 2024. See also K. cruentatum.

Habitat: freshwater (swamps, quiet rivers)

Distribution: See map in TTWG 2025: 138.

Iverson & Berry distinguished K. cruentatum and K. mexicanum by some cryptic “discriminant function scores” without providing a diagnosis or other description of the revalidated species. While the two species are only clearly distinguished by genetic markers, they are allopatric with cruentatum only on the Atlantic versant and mexicanum only on the Pacific versant.
EtymologyNamed after the type locality.
