Etymology | Apparently named after Gaius Julius Caesar Augustus Germanicus (A.D. 12-41), more commonly known as Caligula, the third Julio-Claudian Roman Emperor. He was known for his extreme extravagance, eccentricity, depravity, cruelty, and despotism. His own guards killed him (Beolens et al. 2011: 46). |
