Comment | Illustrations: Stejneger, 1917; Barbour and Ramsden, 1919; Schwartz, 1959d; Vogel, 1965; Vogel, 1966. Synonymy after RODRÍGUEZ SCHETTINO 1999. |
Etymology | Named after the type locality. L. cubensis gigas is from the Greek γιγας (= giant), undoubtedly an allusion to the fact that this subspecies attains the largest sizes of any in the subspecies. L. cubensis minor is from the Latin (= less), certainly a reference to the relatively small size of this subspecies. L. cubensis pambasileus is from the Greek (= lord of all he surveys), possibly a reference to these lizards exploiting elevated perches. L. cubensis paraphrus, from the Greek παράγρ (= beside or near) and αφρός (= foam), perhaps an allusion to the proximity of the type locality to breakers crashing on the southernmost point of a large unnamed key. |
