Comment | Illustrations: Mertens, 1939 (as L. p. lunatus); Cochran, 1941 (as subspecies of L. personatus); Schwartz, 1967. |
Etymology | Named after Latin lunatus (= crescent or halfmoon), presumably in reference to the crescent-shaped shoulder patches of this species. L. lunatus arenicolor is from the Latin (= sand color), presumably in reference to the sandy dorsal color in this subspecies. L. lunatus lewisi is a patronym honoring J. K. Lewis, who collected some of the paratypes of this subspecies. L. lunatus louisae is a matronym honoring Miss Louisa Bowditch Barbour, Thomas Barbour’s daughter and a member of the Utowana Expeditions in the West Indies. L. lunatus melaenoscelis is from the Greek μελάνος and κήλης (= black spot), presumably in reference to the very prominent black nuchal and shoulder patch in this subspecies. L. lunatus thomasi is a patronym, undoubtedly honoring Richard Thomas, friend and field companion of Albert Schwartz. |
