Type Species: Leiosaurus Bellii DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1837 is the type species of the genus Leiosaurus DUMÉRIL & BIBRON 1837.

Phylogenetics: The genera Diplolaemus, Leiosaurus, and Pristidactylus have been combined in the Leiosaurae clade (Morando et al. 2015).
EtymologyNamed after Thomas Bell (1792-1880), a British naturalist and dental surgeon who worked at Guy's Hospital, London (1816-1860). He became Professor of Zoology at King's College (1834) and described many ofthe reptiles Darwin collected. He was a friend of Gray and President of the Linnean Society (Beolens et al. 2011).

The genus was named after Greek leios (λείος), smooth, plain, not embroidered + Greek sauros (σαῦρος), lizard. ["…De Λείος, lisse, uni, laevis, non scaber ; et de Σαῦρος, Lézard, Lacerta…"].
