Comment | Type species: Siaphos poilani BOURRET 1937 is the type species of the genus Leptoseps GREER 1997. Scincella can be distinguished from Leptoseps by the number of digits on the hindlimbs: five versus four, respectively (Greer 1997). Abundance: probably rare; only known from 2 specimens (Darevsky & Orlov 2005). |
Etymology | Named after Eugene Poilane (1887-1964), a French botanist who was in Cochin-China (now a part of Vietnam) and neighboring areas of French Indochina from 1909 until he was assassinated by Viet Cong troops. The genus was named after Greek leptos (λεπτός), peeled, husked; devoid of its skin (also, thin, fine, delicate) and Greek seps, a term often used for elongated snake-like animals. |
