CommentType species: Lygosoma (Rhodona) wilkinsi Parker, 1926 is the type species of the genus Gavisus WELLS & WELLINGTON 1984. WELLS 2012: 97 revived Gavisus for the species G. allanae, ameles, carpentariae, cinereus, colliveri, karlschmidti, rochfordensis, storri, stylis, vittatus, wilkinsi. Unfortunately WELLS did not provide a phylogenetic analysis of the genera into which he broke up Lerista, hence we leave the current genus Lerista intact for the time being.

Gavisus is primarily diagnosed by a lack of forelimbs, but limb reduction has occurred independently at least ten times in Lerista (Skinner et al. 2008). Therefore, AMEY & COUPER (2009) do not regard the use of this single apomorphy as diagnostic of a monophyletic lineage. Amongst the other characters purportedly diagnosing Gavisus (see Wells and Wellington 1984), there is no other apomorphy uniting the species in this assemblage. Skinner et al. (2008) have published a phylogeny of Lerista which shows Gavisus, as diagnosed, to be paraphyletic.

Species group: wilkinsi. Greer 1983 has a table comparing the characters of the wikinsi species group.

Limb morphology: 0 digits, 2 toes
EtymologyNamed for the type locality, Rochford Scrub.
