CommentSynonymy after PETERS & DONOSO-BARROS 1970. Liolaemus hatcheri STEJNEGER 1909 has been removed from synonymy of L. magellanicus by ETHERIDGE 1998.

Publication date: HOMBRON & JACQUINOT has been published in parts from 1846-1853 (Sherborn & Woodward 1901). However, the text for reptiles was published in 1853 (Clark & Crosnier 2000: 415) but the plate with a drawing of the species was already published on plate 2 of the Atlas in 1842 (Clark & Crosnier 2000: 430). The latter is invalid as it only had a vernacular name, hence the publication date for L. magellanicus should be 1853. Gay 1848 had the first latinized name and textual description but he credited the species to Hombron & Jacquinot 1842: plate 2.

Distribution: this is the southernmost lizard in the world (Jaksic 2022).

Group: magellanicus group.
EtymologyNamed after the Straits of Magellan.
