Type locality: A 2..3 km al sur de la intersección de ruta provincial 76 y 23, por ruta provincial 76, a 3.4 km al sur de Ingeniero Jacobacci, departamento 25 de Mayo, Río Negro, Argentina (41° 20.022’ S, 69° 28.233’ O, 898 m elevation).

EtymologyNamed after the Tehuelche chief Modesto Inacayal, who lived in western Patagonia during the 19th century, defended the peace and freedom of his people, and was taken prisoner along with his family in 1884. In 1886 Francisco Moreno took him to to live at the Museo de La Plata to pay him back for the hospitality and help received during his trips to Patagonia. He died that same year and his body was exhibited as an ethnological attraction in the Museo de La Plata, under No. 5438 for 98 years, in 1994 he was buried in the town of Tecka, ancient Tehuelche lands, Chubut, Argentina.
