DiagnosisDiagnosis: This subspecies may be distinguished from both maculatus and subcinctus on the basis of the lower subcaudal counts (apparently not exceeding 68 in any of the specimens examined, or those whose counts are mentioned in the literature. (Leviton 1955)

EtymologyNamed for Alvin Seale (1871 – 1958), Stanford zoologist, ichthyologist, and explorer, who collected the type and several of the paratypes.
