Type locality: Japan (“Tokyo” fide STEJNEGER 1907)  
Reproductionoviparous 
TypesHolotype: ZMB 9419, a 300 mm specimen (F. Hilgendorf, May 1874). 
DiagnosisDiagnosis. The portion of rostral visible from above scarcely as long as the suture between internasals; frontal as broad as long, and as long as its distance from rostral, much shorter than the interparietal suture; parietals large, nearly twice as long as frontal; loreal narrow, twice as long as high, entering the eye below prefrontal; no preocular; two postoculars; temporals 2+3; supralabials 8, fourth and fifth or third, fourth and fifth entering eye; scales in 17 rows, all of which are smooth on the anterior half of the body, but the median 5 to 7 rows on the posterior half of the body have a faint keel at the base of each scale; ventrals 199 to 214; distinctly angulate laterally; anal divided; subcaudals 68 to 75 pairs. CommentHilgendorf’s paper appears to have been published before GÜNTHER’s according to STEJNEGER 1907.
