Type locality: "Cap de Bonne-Espérance, Afrique australe," (in error). Corrected to Cote de l'Or [=Ghana] fide Guibé and Roux-Estève, 1972: 394.

TypesHolotype: RMNH 307, a 283 mm specimen (Eschrict). 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: Only one apical pit. Snout about as long as or longer than parietals. Postnasal in contact with 2nd labial, seldom with Ist as well. Scale rows 17-17-15. Ventrals: 183-193 (♂♂), 196-211 (♀♀). Subcaudals: 17-58 (♂♂), 36-46 (♀♀). (Exceptionally, 177 ventrals and 42 sub- caudals in a male from northem Ghana—a fact which suggests a northern subspecies or a cline.) Color patter with transverse bands or alternating spots, becoming in- distinet in the largest specimens without white stippling.
Maximum size (in mm): 478 (tail 88) in males; 788 (tail 88) in females. (Laurent 1968: 470)
