Amphiglossus minutus — GLAW & VENCES 1994: 318
Amphiglossus minutus — SCHMITZ et al. 2005
DistributionMadagascar

Type locality: “Manongarivo”
Reproduction
TypesHolotype: UMMZ 192705
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A tiny Amphiglossus, 39 mm maximum SVL with 20-22 longitudinal rows of scales around midbody, 48-54 scales between mental scale and anal scale, 29-30 presacral vertebrae, 10-11 lamellae under fourth toe of hindfoot. The head scales are pitted. The coloration dorsally is dark brown (almost black) with lighter brown flanks; tail underside is grey, with most scales marked by a single black spot; sutures of the upper posteriorlabials are lined blotchy brown. No other species of Amphiglossus has such a low number of scales between the mental and anal scale; the lowest numbers previously known occur in A. melanopleura (56-63) and A. macrolepis (60) (Brygoo, 1984a, 1985). Amphiglossus melanopleura also differs from A. minutus in coloration: the flanks of A. melanopleura are darker than the brown dorsal area of body, there is always an obvious dark dorsolateral line, the sutures of the upper labials are lined black, and the tail underside is usually white and unspotted. Amphiglossus melanopleura is larger than A. minutus, maximum SVL 52 mm, has more scale rows (22-24) on the midbody and more lamellae under the fourth toe of the hindfoot (10-16) (Brygoo, 1984a). The tail cross section of Amphiglossus minutus is circular at the base whereas that of A. melanopleura is slightly dorsoventrally flattened. Amphiglossus macrolepis has more (33) presacral vertebrae and reduced digits, with just six lamellae under the fourth toe of the hindfoot (Brygoo, 1985, RAXWORTHY & NUSSBAUM 1993: 331)
