CommentO’Connell & Smith 2018 elevated lineatus to full species status. Note that the NCBI Taxonomy and GenBank had no taxon called M. lineatus in November 2023, and the sequences for this species mentioned in O’Connell et al. 2018 still had some cryptic placeholder names in Genbank.

Coluber striolatus Mertens, 1934:190 is substitute name for Bascanion lineatus Bocourt, 1890:700, a junior secondary homonym of Coluber lineatus Linnaeus (=Lygophis lineatus).

Publication date: the Bocourt description was published in 1890 as part of a the multi-volume Mission scientifique au Mexique ..., published from 1870-1909.
EtymologyNamed after Latin lineatus, lined. [“...cette teinte, étant plus foncée sur le milieu des écailles que sur les côtés, forme deux sortes de lignes longitudinales..."].  (from Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., May 2024)
