Type Species: Mesobaena huebneri is the type species of the genus Mesobaena MERTENS 1925. 
EtymologyNamed after George Huebner (1862-1935), German photographer and collector of the type who traveled in Brazil and Peru (1885-1888).

The genus was named after Greek mesos (μέσος), of the middle point or part + Greek baino (βαίνω), walk, step, but also of all motion on ground. ["...Diese südamerikanische Leposternidengattung steht zwischen Amphisbaena und Anopsibaena…"].
