DistributionNew Zealand (except for the extreme north of the North Island and part of the central and southern South Island). Present on a number of offshore islands in Cook Strait and in the north and northeast of North Island.

CommentSynonymy: Heteropholis nebulosus MCCANN 1955 has been removed from the synonymy of Hoplodactylus granulatus.

Type species: Mokopirirakau granulatus (Gray, 1845) is the type species of the genus Mokopirirakau NIELSEN et al. 2011.

EtymologyThe genus name is derived from Moko-piri-ra ̄kau, the Maori name for forest gecko. Maori nouns typically have no gender, but we treat Mokopirirakau as masculine for the purposes of nomenclatural construction.
