Distribution | New Zealand (except for the extreme north of the North Island and part of the central and southern South Island). Present on a number of offshore islands in Cook Strait and in the north and northeast of North Island. Type locality: New Zealand |

Diagnosis | Definition (genus). Pupils with crenulated margins; scansorial pad not continuous along length of distal phalanx; toes narrow, with straight lamellae, 7–14 lamellae beneath digit IV of pes; apical plates present at base of claw of digit I only; ventral skin opaque; mouth lining and tongue usually pigmented; precloacal pore series in males extending onto thighs; SVL 60–91 mm [NIELSEN et al. 2011]. |
Comment | Synonymy: Heteropholis nebulosus MCCANN 1955 has been removed from the synonymy of Hoplodactylus granulatus. Max. snout-vent-length: 93 mm. Type species: Mokopirirakau granulatus (Gray, 1845) is the type species of the genus Mokopirirakau NIELSEN et al. 2011. Maori nouns typically have no gender, but we treat Mokopirirakau as masculine for the purposes of nomenclatural construction. |
