DistributionSW Libya (Ghat Oasis), Chad

Type locality: Ghat Oasis, south-west Fezzan, Libya (24°59'N: 10° 11E) at 700m elevation.
Reproductionoviparous (manual imputation, fide Zimin et al. 2022)
TypesHolotype: MZUF 36519 (ex NHCL 1543), an adult collected by G. Garganese, summer of 1934. Paratypes: MZUF 39097 (ex NHCL 1544), a female with the same data as the holotype. MZUF 39098 (ex NHCL 1545) an adult lacking the tail and posterior portion of the body, from the same locality, but collected by G. Scortecci, 16 March 1934.
MZUF 36520 (ex NHCL 1546) and MSNM 2882, two subadults from the same locality, but collected by G. Scortecci, 13 October 1936.
DiagnosisDiagnosis: The new species is most closely related to M. cairi, M. macrorhynchus and M algeriensis, having a snout that is hooked in profile, but the latter species has the most strongly hooked and pointed snout of the four. M. lanzai differs in having a larger and broader rostral and a frontal that is much larger than the postfrontal and supraoculars, while the parietal may be divided into two discrete shields, and the occipitals are divided. This form differs from the other three species in having 12 midtail scale rows like some Myriopholis from the Horn of Africa and south-west Arabia (Broadley & Wallach, 2007, Broadley et al. 2014).
CommentSimilar species: M. cairi, M. algeriensis.

Distribution: probably in Algeria, as the type locality is close to the Algerian border.
EtymologyNamed after Benedetto Lanza (1924-2016), herpetologist at the University of Florence. See Corti 2013 for biographical notes.
