DistributionMauritius (Serpent Island [serpensinsula], Round-Island [durrelli])

Type locality: Serpent Island, off the North coast of Mauritius.

TypesHolotype: MCZ 51550, gravid female
Holotype: BMNH 1992.771 (British Museum of Natural History, London) , female, collected August 1993 by C. G. Jones. Paratypes: BMNH, MCZ. [durrellorum] 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (durrellorum): A population of Nactus serpensinsula differing from the nominal form in its much smaller size (up to 56 mm from snout to vent (Bullocket al., 1985) but usually less, compared with up to 65 mm), more delicate build, relatively longer tail, rather flatter head, less elevated dorsal tubercles sometimes with the most anterior striation forming a keel that is more prominent than any others present, paler colouring in life and absence of well developed broad dark bars on the back (usually present in adult N. s. serpensinsula). (Arnold & Jones 1994). 
CommentFrom Mauritius only fossils are known (F. Glaw, pers. comm.). 
EtymologyNamed after the type locality, Serpent Island.

N. s. durrelli has been named after Mrs. Gerald and Lee Durrell.
