Type locality: northern Australia  
Reproductionoviparous. Exhibits temperature‐dependent sex determination (TSD) fide Cornejo-Páramo et al. 2020 (and references therein).

Holotype: AM R4158, from near Port Darwin, N. T. [tesselatus]

Type species: Natator tessellatus MCCULLOCH 1908 is the type species of the genus Natator MCCULLOCH 1908: 127. 
EtymologyPresumably named after the Latin depressus (low or flattened) in reference to the shell shape (the species is commonly known as the Flatback Turtle). (G. Shea, pers. comm., 9 Feb 2024)
