CommentDistribution: not listed explicitly by BROADLEY, DORIA & WIGGE (2003) for Zambia. Not in Gabon fide PAUWELS & VANDE WEGHE 2008. Reports from South Africa may represent N. sylvatica, previously a subspecies of N. variegata. Not in East Africa (i.e. Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi fide S. Spawls, pers. comm., 28 June 2018). Not in Equatorial Guinea fide SÁNCHEZ-VIALAS et al. 2022.

Synonymy partly after BROADLEY & COTTERILL 2004.

Subspecies: Natriciteres variegata sylvatica BROADLEY 1966 and Natriciteres variegata bipostocularis BROADLEY 1962 have been elevated to species rank. Natriciteres variegata pembana (LOVERIDGE 1935) has been elevated to full species.

Habitat: at least partially coastal and thus considered (partially) “marine”. 
EtymologyApparently named after its variegated color pattern, i.e. the variable, irregular patches or bands.
