Comment | Synonymy: WAGNER (30 July 2002, pers. comm.) synonymized Oligodon propinquus with Oligodon waandersi based on an examination of the types. The locality of propinquus ["Java"] is most certainly incorrect. |
Etymology | The species epithet, propinquus, comes from Latin (prop(e) "near" + (h)inc "hence" + -uus) generally a sense of closeness. In this case, intended as appearance, means "resembling, similar, like, alike." Its reference is the similarity to the other two species considered by Jan, Oligodon sublineatus and Oligodon subgriseus (now synonym of O. taeniolatus). |
