Diagnosis | Diagnosis. A small species of Ophisaurus (largest specimen examined, 181 mm SVL) differing from other members of the genus in the United States by the following combination of characters (Fig. 1): low number of scales in longitudinal rows on body (86-94 above lateral fold, 100-108 in middorsal row); three or four dark stripes or spots above lateral fold separated by pale stripes through scale centers (stripes on body usually most prominent posteriorly); one or more supralabials usually entering orbit or separated only by small suboculars; usually two frontonasals, often with anterior scale variously fused with postinternasals; caudal vertebrae with fracture planes.
