TypesSyntypes: BMNH 1946.8.19.43-44 (formerly xv.57a-b, 37.7.29.54-55), collected H. Cuming. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Otosaurus is diagnosed by the following combination of characters: (1) body large and robust, with adults being longer than 115 mm SVL; (2) large supranasal scales in contact medially, occluding fron- tonasal contact with the rostral; and (3) supraoculars seven or eight [LINKEM, DIESMOS & BROWN 2011].

Type species: Otosaurus cumingi GRAY 1845 is the type species of the genus Otosaurus GRAY 1845. 
EtymologyNamed after Hugh Cuming (1791-1865), an English naturalist and conchologist. See Beolens et al. 2011: 60 for more details.
