CommentEspecially young animals have a characteristic white (or yellow) band with dark borders on the dorsal side of their neck.

Subspecies: Pachydactylus scutatus angolensis LOVERIDGE 1944 and Pachydactylus scutatus robertsi FITZSIMONS 1938 have been elevated to species status by BAUER et al. 2006. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin scutum = an oblong shield and scutatus = armed with a shield.
