DiagnosisDiagnosis (psychonothes): A subspecies of D. costatus characterized by high number of ventral scales between mental and vent, very dark dorsum with promi-
nent, contrasting and fully expressed dorsal pattern, often with longitudinal lines connecting the dots in the herringbones (Fig. 10), venter pale bronzy with black streaking on throat and chest, and two prefrontals. (Schwartz 1964)

Habitat: Comptus and Panolopus have both ground and tree-adapted ecomorphs (Schools et al. 2022).

Similar species: Panolopus psychonothes and P. chalcorhabdus can only be separated by the angled subocular width divided by the angled subocular height (2.37–2.72 [n=5] versus 2.77–3.28 [n=5]). (Schools & Hedges 2024) 
EtymologyNamed in reference to this lethargy, meaning "torpid from the cold", from Greek psyche = breath, life, soul, spirit, and Greek nothros, nothes = sluggish, torpid. According to Schools & Hedges 2024 the name means “torpid from the cold
