DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): Paragehyra species are medium-sized geckos, ranging from about 59–75 mm in adult maximum SVL. The build is medium, with fairly slender limbs and a somewhat depressed body form. As in all gekkonids, eyelids do not function. Paragehyra species are generally brown or grayish in color, sometimes with spots, mottling, or other pattern elements. Paragehyra can be distinguished from other geckos by the following combination of characteristics: hyoid with second ceratobranchial cartilages; 14 scleral ossicles; stapedial foramen present; frontal single; parietal paired; cloacal bones present; phalangeal formula 2-3-4-5-3/2-3-4-5-4 (manus/pes); paraphalangeal elements absent; eye with vertical pupil having notched margins; digits free, dilated, bearing undivided adhesive lamellae; claws present, on digits II–V claw-bearing terminal phalanges extending beyond dilated pads, on digit I claw enclosed in asymmetric sheath, not extending beyond pad; dorsal scalation consists of small, juxtaposed granules intermixed with larger tubercles; preanal pores present; tail moderately depressed, moderate length, tapering; females lay two hard-shelled eggs (Kluge 1967, Kluge and Nussbaum 1995, Nussbaum and Raxworthy 1994).

EtymologyNamed after G. Petit, the collector of the holotype.
