EtymologyNamed after Dr. Joseph Beal Steere (1842-1940), a zoologist and botanist whose bachelor's degree in natural history (1868) and bachelor of law (1870) were both from the University of Michigan. He made a round-the-world trip (1870-1875) during which he went up the Amazon as far as he could by boat, crossed the Andes to Peru, and sailed for China.
