Type locality: "Kasenyi, Lake Albert. Bunia Terr., Ituri, Congo" [= Zaire]

CommentSynonymy: Considered a synonym of Pelusios castaneus by Wermuth and Mertens (1977: 117). The recognition of the weakly differentiated P. castaneus and P. chapini as full species is doubtful fide Fritz et al. (2010).

EtymologyNamed after Dr. James Paul Chapin (1889-1964), an American ornithologist and co-leader ofthe Lang-Chapin expedition, which made the first comprehensive biological survey of the Belgian Congo (1909-1915).
