Type locality: between San Pédro (10 km W) and Grand-Bérébi (20 km E) (4º50' N, 6º47'W), Ivory Coast.

Etymologynamed after the Corsican word “cupulatta”, meaning a “light blow” and also “turtle” and is the name of the Corsican organization that financed J. Maran’s research.
