DistributionSW Argentina (in San Juan to south of Mendoza province, a semiarid region in the Subandean district.)

Type locality: Los Reyunos, San Rafael, Mendoza, Argentina, 900-1000 m elevation, area of Sierra Pintada.

TypesHolotype: MHNSR. 300 - Un macho adulto; colectado 20-abrH-1975 por H. A. Lagiglia. Paratype: MZUF. 26124 - un macho adulto; 8 km. E Caucete, San Juan, en zona medanosa árida; colectado el 19-noviembre-1978 por J. M. Cei. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: “Un Elapomorphus de tamaño relativamente grande, caracterizado por coloración dorsal amarillo uniforme u ocre, ausencia de líneas negras longitudinales y manchas ventrales transversas; con co-llar blanco-negro nucal bien evidente.” (Cei 1984)

CommentClosed to P. punctatus, but without dots on dorsal coloration. (See P. punctatus).

Habitat: xerophilic mountain. 
EtymologyNamed after Spanish Cuyo, the geopolitical region conformed by the provinces of San Juan, San Luis and Mendoza in Argentina + Latin -anus, pertaining to, belonging to. [“...En base a su localización geográfica regional proponemos para la especie que a continuación describimos la denominación de: Elapomorphus cuyanus sp. nov. ...”].
