Diagnosis | Diagnosis (genus). ”Large (maximum SVL 200-275 mm) skinks; frontoparietals fused; teeth in anterior part of both upper and lower jaws sharply pointed, recurved and fang-like.” (Sadlier 1987)

Type species: Eumeces garnieri Bavay 1869 is the type species of the genus Monophorus COPE 1892, a nomen oblitum and a synonym of Phoboscincus, fide Shea 2021. |
Etymology | Named after Jules (or "Jacques") Gamier (1839-1904), a mining engineer, geologist, and explorer who discovered nickel ore in New Caledonia (1864). |
