TypesNeotype: BMNH 60.3.18.18, purchased by H. Cuming; designated by Sadlier (1987). Holotype not in MNHN, but listed by Brygoo 1985. 
DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus). ”Large (maximum SVL 200-275 mm) skinks; frontoparietals fused; teeth in anterior part of both upper and lower jaws sharply pointed, recurved and fang-like.” (Sadlier 1987)

Behavior: Appears to be extremely secretive.

Type species: Eumeces garnieri Bavay 1869 is the type species of the genus Monophorus COPE 1892, a nomen oblitum and a synonym of Phoboscincus, fide Shea 2021. 
EtymologyNamed after Jules (or "Jacques") Gamier (1839-1904), a mining engineer, geologist, and explorer who discovered nickel ore in New Caledonia (1864).
