Comment | Illustrations: Hassler, 1930; Cochran, 1941; Schwartz, 1966. Subspecies: HARVEY et al. 2012 do not list any subspecies of this species. |
Etymology | P. lineolatus presumably is from the Latin lineola (= feminine diminutive for lined), an obvious reference to the many light longitudinal lines that characterize the dorsal pattern of this species; Gotch (1986) added the suffix -atus (= provided with). P. lineolatus beatensis refers to Isla Beata, the type locality and entire known range of this subspecies. P. lineolatus meracula is from the Latin (= pure), possibly because the coloration of the head and snout are consistent within this subspecies — as opposed to being variable in P. l. lineolatus. P. lineolatus perplicata is from the Latin (= confused) and alludes to the entangled or involved situation encountered by Schwartz (1965) when naming the Môle St. Nicholas series. P. lineolatus privigna is from the Latin (= stepdaughter), possibly a reference to the conclusion that the ancestors of the species were separated into North and South Island forms, with the latter (P. l. beatensis and P. l. privigna) trapped to the south of the Sierra de Baoruco and the Massif de la Selle. P. lineolatus semota is from the Latin (= isolated), presumably a reference to the consistent differences between this subspecies as an isolated outlier on Isla Catalina. |
