Type locality: Río Grande, 35°24’ S, 70°15’ W, near Peteroa Volcano, Mendoza, Argentina.  
TypesHolotype: MACN 37671 (Mus. Argent. Cien. Nat.). Paratypes: MACN, MRSN, IADIZA, MLP 
DiagnosisSee Cei & Videla 2003: 295. 
CommentThis species belongs to the palluma group (fide LOBO et al. 2010) or the verdugo group.

EtymologyNamed after the Spanish “verdugo”, in reference to the deep black hood of the lizard, reminiscent of a medieval hangman.
