Type locality: Argentina (Neuquén), Teru Lagoon, 40 km W Zapala, 1200 m elevation [39° 05’ S, 70° 22’ W]

DiagnosisComparisons: for a table of characters across the payuniae clade (including zapalensis), see Lobo et al. 2021: Table 2.

Coloration: This species never exhibits completely melanic individuals. In P. zapalensis, white dorsal spots can form transversal lines. Phymaturus zapalensis has a patternless tail (ringed in P. niger sp. nov.). Dark lateral band are always conspicuous in P. zapalensis (can be absent in female P. niger sp. nov.). The belly of males is orange in P. zapalensis (yellow in P. niger sp. nov.; Table 2) (Lobo et al. 2021). 
CommentDiet: herbivorous

This species belongs to the patagonicus group (fide LOBO et al. 2010).
