CommentSimilar species: Cercosaura ocellata Wagler, 1830 has been confused with Placosoma cordylinum (Sturaro 2016).

Type species: Placosoma cordylinum TSCHUDI 1847 is the type species of the genus Placosoma TSCHUDI 1847. Sometimes the authorship is cited as FITZINGER in TSCHUDI 1847 but Grillitsch, cited in Borges-Nojosa et al. 2016 argued that Tschudi should be the sole author.

Distribution: see map in Sturaro 2016: 88.

Subspecies: The subspecies of Placosoma cordylinum differed from one another in the number of dorsal scales at the level of shoulders (4–8 in P. c. cordylinum and 8 or 9 in P. c. champsonotus) and in the condition of the median dorsal scale (usually wider than long in P. c. cordylinum, and longer than wide in P. c. champsonotus) (Uzzell 1959).
EtymologyNamed after Latin cordylus, lizard pecies due to Linnaeus, 1758 + Latin -inus, suffix indicating possession, belonging to, pertaining to, having the nature of, made of, quality of, state or condition of. (Esteban Lavilla, pers. comm., April 2024)

The genus was named after Greek placos (πλάκος, from πλάξ), anything flat and broad + Greek soma (σῶμα), body.
