Holotype: MHNG 1464.45, male; paratypes: BMNH 1975.1074 [juv., probably from Bambour (Bambur) area, Nigeria], BMNH 1975.1141-42 (juv. female and ad. female, Bambour), USNM 125691 (female, Marama, Nigeria), ZFMK 18686 [juv. female, Benoue (Garoua), Kamerun]. Diagnosis | Diagnosis (perreti). A subspecies of C. florulentus distinguished from the nominate race by 25 (instead of 21-23) dorsal scale rows at midbody. It differs from f. florulentus and f. keniensis in higher ventral counts (219 versus 214 or fewer in males, 226-231 against 205-228 in females), and more maxillary teeth (16-17 instead of 15 or less). Comment | Distribution: Not explicitely listed by SCHLEICH, KÄSTLE & KABISCH 1996. The author is “GEOFFROY 1809: 67” fide DUMÉRIL et al. 1854. Reports from Libya represent Hemorrhois algirus or possibly P. rogersi (Bauer et al. 2017). For a map see Sindaco et al. 2013. Subspecies: Schätti 2014: 384 elevated perreti to full species. However, the only difference he mentions is that perreti has 25 dorsals (vs. 27-29 in the Platyceps florulentus complex) |
Etymology | P. f. keniensis was named after its type locality in Kenya. P. f. perreti was named after Swiss herpetologist Jean-Luc Perret (1925-2023). |
