Type locality: Derby, Western Australia.  
TypesHolotype: WAM R26828 
DiagnosisDiagnosis: A moderately large Pogona, distinguishable from P. m. minor by its brighter coloration (more brownish, less greyish), greater size, wider head, stronger contrast between scales in front of and behind transverse series of occipital spines, and lack of longitudinal series of spines on side of nape [STORR 1982].
CommentHybridization: In areas where both mitchellii and minor occur the two forms hybridize (MANTHEY & SCHUSTER 1999, MÜLLER 2002). 
EtymologyP. (m.) mitchelli was named after Francis John Mitchell (1929–1970), Curator of the South Australian Museum in Adelaide.
