Type locality: "des côtes de Guinée Christiansbourg). [=Christianbourg, Accra Region, southeastern Ghana, 5˚33'N, 0˚11'W].

TypesHolotype: USTL, a 172 mm specimen (Wied-Neuwied), destroyed during World War II.

Distribution: although this species has been reported from Nigeria (e.g. in Wallach et al. 2014), there seems to be no specific data or localities hence its presence in this country is questionable (B. Hughes, pers. comm. 12 Dec 2014). 
EtymologyNamed after Maximilian Alexander Philip, Prince zu Wied-Neuwied (1782-1867), an aristocratic explorer. After studying natural history at Georg-August-Universitat Göttingen, he entered the Prussian army (1802), ultimately becoming a Major-General.
