DiagnosisDiagnosis: A small species of Praeteropus with fewer than 100 paravertebral scales, 3 supraoculars, 6 supralabials, 4 infralabials, undivided upper secondary temporal, and no prefrontals. Presacral vertebrae 48, 7 cervical vertebrae, 6 premaxillary teeth. Distinguished from all other species in the genus by its color pattern consisting of a series of prominent lateral stripes.

EtymologyNeo-Latin adjective monachus, from the Greek “monachós”, meaning solitary, reclusive (hence, also a hermit or a monk).
