DiagnosisDIAGNOSIS (n=20). A fairly small, rather slender species of Pristurus with the following characteristics: lateral downgrowths of frontal bone meeting and fusing on midline, nasal process of premaxilla not extending backwards as far as the level of the anterior margins of the orbits, little or no contact between the palatal sections of the maxillae behind the premaxilla, 24 presacral vertebrae, nostril situated between the rostral, a supranasal and two postnasals, subtibials expanded, no sagittal ridges or fringes of elongate scales on the tail in either sex, patches of dark pigment present anterior and posterior to the vent in males. Most similar to P. insignis of Socotra but this species is much larger (up to 60 mm snout to vent compared with a known maximum of 38 mm in P. celerrimus) with 25 presacral vertebrae, smaller belly and subtibial scales and no dark pigment in the vent region of either sex. P. rupestris and P. cf. flavipunctatus are sympatric with P. celerrimus but have only 23 presacral vertebrae, smaller ventral scales, fringes of elongate scales on the tail, at least in males, and no dark pigment in the vent region of either sex. P. rupestris is also considerably smaller apparently not exceeding 30 mm snout to vent in Oman. (Arnold 1977)
CommentDistribution: See map in Burriel-Carranza et al. 2019 for map in UAE.
EtymologyApparently after Latin celeris = fast, with celerrimus meaning “the fastest”, although Arnold does not comment on its etymology or speed in his original description.
