Diagnosis | Diagnosis: A moderate sized species ofPristurus growing to about 35 mm from snout to vent with a relatively long head and narrow snout. Lateral downgrowths of frontal bone meeting and fusing on the midline, downward anterior processes present but short(*); nasal section of premaxilla not extend- ing backwards as far as the level of the anterior margins of the orbits, the posterior margin of its palatal section forming two deep curves(*) rather than a strong W-shape; clear and extensive contact between the palatal sections of the maxillae behind the premaxilla(*) but without extensive interdigitation; 23 presacral vertebrae(*) with the lateral sections of the anterior zygapophyses folded right over the contiguous posterior zygapophyses of the next vertebra(*); three sternal and one, less commonly two, complete xiphisternal ribs; nostril situated between the rostral, a supranasal and one or two postnasal scales; one scale between the two supranasals; upper palpebral fold projecting, a group of enlarged scales above the ear opening, scattered enlarged scales on flanks(*); subtibial scales strongly enlarged; tail compressed in males, with a dorsal sagittal fringe of long scales above that does not extend on to the body. Differs from more primitive species, viz. P. celerrimus, P. insignis, P. insignoides, P. guichardi and P. socotranus, in possessing the derived features marked with an asterisk above. Most of these are shared with more advanced species but these differ from P. abdelkuri in their shorter snout and interdigitation be- tween the maxillae behind the premaxilla [ARNOLD 1986]. |
