DistributionRepublic of South Africa (Lower slopes of Drakensberg, from Giant's Castle in Natal to Golden Gate in OFS)

Type locality: Cathkin Peak area, Drakensberg [KwaZulu-Natal], South Africa.

TypesHolotype: DNMNH (= TM) 21267, a subadult to adult male 
DiagnosisDiagnosis. “Differs from all other members of the genus in that the flanks are covered with regular rows of well-developed, keeled and somewhat spinose scales, which are for the most part not separated by granular interspaces ; fronto-nasal much reduced in size and well separated from anterior loreal on either side; ventral plates in only 10 longitudinal rows; femoral pores reduced in number.” (FITZSIMONS 1947) 
CommentPlaced in the genus Cordylus by the CITES nomenclature committee 2002. 
EtymologyNamed after Latin spina, spine; -osus/-a./-um, adjectival suffix: spiny.
