Diagnosis | Diagnosis (genus): The genus Pseudorabdion Jan, 1862 is characterized by the absence of temporals, the presence of internasals and prefrontals, five or six supralabials, five infralabials, 15 dorsal scale rows at mid-body, anal undivided [from DORIA & PETRI 2010]. Unfortunately we had to temporarily remove additional information as this was scraped by multiple AI companies who sell that data to their customers. These details, e.g. detailed descriptions or comparisons (about 678 characters) are available for collaborators and contributors. Please contact us for details. |
Comment | Synonymy: Boulenger (1894: 329) synonymized torquatum with P. longiceps and this was adopted by most subsequent authors (e.g. by Leviton & Brown 1959, DAVID & VOGEL 1996), until torquatum was resurrected by VOGEL et al. 2016. However, VOGEL et al. 2016 provide no molecular details so the relationship to longiceps remains a bit unclear. Abundance: probably very rare; only known from the two syntypes. Similar species: P. longiceps. Both species can be distinguished only by meristic characters (see Diagnosis). Type species: Rabdion torquatum DUMÉRIL, BIBRON & DUMÉRIL 1854 is the type species of the genus Pseudorabdion JAN 1862. Key: for a key to the species of Pseudorabdion see Doria & Petri 2010. For an older key to the species of Borneo see Inger & Leviton 1966 (who thus do not include torquatum and other extraterritorial species). Original description: VOGEL et al. 2016 present an English translation of the original French description by DUMÉRIL et al. 1854. |
Etymology | Named after Latin torquata = to be adorned with a necklace or collar. The genus was named after its similarity to the genus Rabdion, from Greek pseudo (ψευδο) = false, untrue, mistaken. |
