Type locality: municipality of Santo Inácio, paleoquaternary dune fields of the middle São Francisco River, Bahia, Brazil.

DiagnosisDiagnosis (genus): For a definition of the genus (in Portuguese) see RODRIGUES 1991.

Diagnosis: “Palpebra ausente, ouvido externo presente. Escamas dorsals forternente carenadas e mucronadas, ventrais lisas, dispostas em quatro fileiras longitudinais. Membros antcriores com quatro dedos (pollex ausenre), os posteriores bern desenvolvidos, com cinco dedos, Prefrontais presentes.separadas nalinhamediana.Vinrea 21escamas a volta do meio do corpo; 36 a 37 fileiras transversais de dorsals. Dais pares de mentaisem contato na !inha med iana. Macho com 4-6 poros de cada lado.” [RODRIGUES 1991]

CommentPsilophthalmus is thought to be related to Nothobachia.

Type species: Psilophthalmus paeminosus RODRIGUES 1991 is the type species of the genus Psilophthalmus RODRIGUES 1991. Psilophthalmus is preoccupied by Psilophthalmus Szépligeti 1902 (Hymenoptera, Braconidae), hence Rodrigues et al. 2017 suggested the replacement name Psilops with Psilops paeminosus as type species. 
EtymologyThe genus is named after Greek psilo (naked) and ops (eye). The previous name was also coined after Greek opthalmos = eye, face.
