DistributionSW Morocco (Mogador/Atlas Mountains; elevation 1200 to 4000 m)

Type locality: Djebel Hadid, near Mogador, Morocco.  
Reproductionoviparous; the reproductive period for the geckos is from March to June (Bouazza et al., 2016).

DiagnosisDiagnosis: Usually 24 or 25 presacral vertebrae (91% of cases, n =46); proximal autotomic caudal vertebrae with long, backwardly directed transverse processes (Fig. 2); first upper labial scale usually reaching nostril, or only separated by a narrow rim, and often fused to lower postnasal scale (Fig. 1); cloacal tubercles large and prominent, especially in males;
Coloration and sexual dimorphism: strong sexual dichromatism, males being pale with many red or dark brownish spots that are often more frequent or darker, or both, on the flanks and sides of the neck, and frequently the head as well; females dark brownish or greyish with darker markings that often form longitudinal series; no prominent spots in shoulder area; dark colouring on posterior underside of males not extending to lower hind limbs. CommentType species: Gymnodactylus trachyblepharus BOETTGER 1873 is the type species of the genus Quedenfeldtia BOETTGER 1883.

Variation: Orange, yellow, and white variants were found in approximately equal proportions in both sexes, and in juveniles and adults (Blouin-Demers et al. 2013).

Elevation: Maybe the gecko with the highest vertical distribution.

Sympatry: Above 2500 m: Atlantolacerta andreanszkyi. Below 2500 m: Podarcis vaucheri, Scelarcis perspicillata, Tarentola mauritanica, Psammodromus algirus, Timon tangitanus and Agama impalearis (Bons & Geniez, 1996; Schleich et al., 1996).
